As students and parents are getting ready for back to school, it’s important to stay on top of those healthy dental habits you’ve been working on all summer.
One important thing to consider when going back to school is the food you're eating. Sugary foods may taste good, but they don’t give you long-term energy for your brain and body. Instead, opt for nuts, carrots, and apples. These are healthy treats that can help you get through the day without decay.
Are you considering packing your student’s backpack with a toothbrush and floss? We say, “go for it”! Having a toothbrush and floss at school is an excellent way to keep them from needing dental work. They don't work on their own so be sure they are being put to use, especially if your child has braces. As for toothpaste, we suggest packing it if they want fresh breath, but it isn’t necessary for keeping their teeth clean.
Is your child a sports player? If so, you may want to consider getting them a mouthguard. The use of a mouthguard is an excellent way to avoid trauma and broken teeth during sports. However, if they do have an incident on the court or field be sure to see your dentist for any trauma to teeth. If it’s more serious, you may consider seeing a medical doctor.
At the end of the day, it’s important for everyone to maintain good oral health. So, make sure you build and keep the habit of brushing twice a day in addition to flossing. Not only do you want to avoid needing fillings, but your overall health is related to your dental health in many ways. For example, good oral health can, in addition to giving you a beautiful smile, make diabetes more manageable and decrease the risk of heart problems.
Staying consistent with your dental health also means visiting the dentist. We understand that it can be easy to forget to schedule that appointment, which is why a great reminder is setting up regular times to see the dentist, like back-to-school time, so you don’t forget.
With back-to-school season in full swing, we’re offering quick appointments with participation in most insurances because, at Agape Dental, we want to care for your teeth and your overall health because they are related. Not to mention Dr. Sipes owns and sees all of her patients to ensure they are receiving the best possible care.
